About Kerala Kathakali Centre
The Kerala Kathakali Centre is a small theatre in Fort Kochi devoted to Kerala's classical and martial arts, a few minutes' walk from the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. It is best known for a daily evening Kathakali programme designed for first-time viewers. The audience is invited in early to watch the performers apply their elaborate make-up, an introduction to the hand gestures and facial expressions follows, and then an episode from the epics is performed with live percussion and singing. The centre also presents Kalaripayattu demonstrations and Indian classical music and dance recitals on a regular schedule. Seating is limited, and shows in the December and January tourist season tend to fill up.
