About Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica
The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Cochin and one of the landmarks of Fort Kochi. The Portuguese founded a church here in 1505, and it was raised to a cathedral in 1558. The original building was demolished under British rule; the present church was commissioned in 1887 and consecrated on 19 November 1905, and Pope John Paul II declared it a basilica in 1984. Its white twin-spired exterior hides a pastel interior with frescoes and murals on the columns, seven large canvases of the Passion, stained glass and altar paintings by the Italian Jesuit artist Antonio Moscheni. At Christmas the basilica is illuminated, and its midnight Mass is the centre of the season in Fort Kochi.
