About Vasco da Gama Square
Vasco da Gama Square is the narrow promenade beside the Chinese fishing nets at Fort Kochi, where the harbour mouth meets the beach walkway. Stalls along it sell the day's catch, which nearby shacks will cook to order, along with tender coconut, snacks and souvenirs, and the nets are worked by teams of fishermen through the day. The square is the ceremonial starting point of the Cochin Carnival: in the last edition the carnival flags were hoisted here on 21 December. The walkway continues west along the beach past the remains of Fort Emmanuel towards the sunset viewpoints. It is free, open at all hours and at its busiest from about 4:30 pm until dark.
