Cochin Carnival 2026โ27: Pappanji, Rally & What's Confirmed
The Cochin Carnival is Fort Kochi's year-end festival, held over the last two weeks of December and ending on New Year's Day. For 2026โ27 the fixed points are clear. The Pappanji, a giant effigy of an old man that stood about 35 feet tall in the last edition, is burned at the stroke of midnight on Thursday 31 December 2026, and the carnival rally of floats, costumed groups and percussion moves from Veli Ground to Parade Ground on Friday 1 January 2027. The detailed 2026 programme had not been published on the carnival's website when this page was written. As a guide, the last edition opened with a ceremony of peace and solidarity on 14 December, hoisted the carnival flags at Vasco da Gama Square on 21 December with a cross-country cycle race the same morning, and held a kolam and rangoli contest in Mattancherry on Christmas Day. Sports, from beach football and kayaking to swimming and a boat race, fill the days in between. The carnival began in 1984 as a beach festival organised by three young people from Kochi for the United Nations' International Youth Year, and it is run by a committee chaired by the Fort Kochi Sub-Collector. Events are free, and single-use plastics are banned.

Good to know
- Check cochincarnival.org in December for the 2026 schedule; event dates and venues are confirmed only a few weeks ahead.
- On 31 December, reach Fort Kochi by early evening. Police stop vehicles outside the area and close the grounds when they are full.
- Stay in Fort Kochi on New Year's Eve if you can. Boats and buses out are overwhelmed after midnight.
- The 1 January rally is easier to enjoy with children than the midnight crowd. Find a place along the route from Veli Ground before it starts in the afternoon.
- Carry a steel bottle and avoid plastic; the organisers run it as a green carnival.
