Snake Boat Races in and around Kochi
Snake boat racing, or vallam kali, is Kerala's signature water sport: chundan vallams more than a hundred feet long, each rowed by a hundred or more oarsmen to the rhythm of boat songs. The nearest confirmed race to Kochi this season is the Piravom Boat Race on Saturday 17 October 2026, on the Muvattupuzha river at Piravom in the east of Ernakulam district, as listed in Kerala Tourism's festival calendar. Kochi's own race is the Indira Gandhi Boat Race, rowed on the backwaters off Marine Drive and traditionally held in the last week of December. In practice it has not been an annual fixture: it returned in 2019 after a gap of many years, and no date for December 2026 had been announced when this page was written. The Champions Boat League, a professional league of snake boat races launched in 2019, has included legs at Marine Drive and Piravom in past seasons, and its schedule changes each year. The best-known race of all, the Nehru Trophy, is rowed on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, about 55 km south of Kochi, usually in August. The Cochin Carnival also lists a boat race among its December events. This page lists races and related events as dates are confirmed.

Good to know
- Race dates move with river levels, weather and funding. Confirm with Kerala Tourism or the district tourism council in the week before.
- For a Marine Drive race, the walkway gives a free view; arrive at least an hour early for a place at the rail.
- Piravom is about an hour and a half from Ernakulam by road. Go early, because the riverbanks fill up and roads into the town are closed.
- Carry a cap, water and rain cover. Viewing is in the open and races can run late.
- Heats are short, but the gaps between them are long; the final is usually in the late afternoon.
