About Ernakulathappan Ground
Ernakulathappan Ground is the open space attached to the Ernakulam Shiva Temple, the temple in the centre of the city whose deity, Ernakulathappan, is regarded as the lord of Ernakulam. The temple's annual festival falls in the Malayalam month of Makaram, roughly mid-January to mid-February. It opens with the hoisting of the flag, builds to the Pakalpooram on the seventh day, when caparisoned elephants process with Panchavadyam and Pandimelam percussion to Durbar Hall Ground, and ends with the Arattu. Kathakali, Ottamthullal and classical concerts are staged through the week. The ground has also been the long-standing venue of the Kochi International Book Festival, usually held around late November and early December.
