About Kerala Folklore Museum
The Kerala Folklore Museum is a privately run museum at Thevara, built and run by the family of collector George Thaliath. The three-storey building is itself an exhibit, assembled from carved timber, pillars and doorways salvaged from old houses and temples across Kerala and finished in the state's traditional architectural styles. Inside, the museum says its collection runs to more than 6,000 pieces: masks, Theyyam and Kathakali costumes, puppets, wooden and bronze sculptures, musical instruments, jewellery and ritual and household objects. The top floor is a theatre with a painted and carved wooden ceiling, used for classical and folk performances and private events. It is the most concentrated introduction to Kerala's folk arts within the city.
