About Paradesi Synagogue
The Paradesi Synagogue stands at the end of Synagogue Lane in Jew Town, next to Mattancherry Palace. Built in 1568 by the Paradesi Jewish community, it is described as the oldest functioning synagogue in India. The interior is small and richly furnished: the floor is laid with hundreds of hand-painted Chinese porcelain tiles from the 18th century, each one different, Belgian glass chandeliers hang from the ceiling, and the pulpit has brass rails. The synagogue's treasures include Torah scrolls and the copper plates that record privileges granted to the Jewish leader Joseph Rabban. An 18th-century clock tower rises beside it. The lane outside, lined with antique, embroidery and spice shops, is the usual end point of Mattancherry heritage walks.
