About Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple
The Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple, between Edappally and Kakkanad, is dedicated to Vamana, the avatar of Vishnu at the centre of the Onam story, and Thrikkakara is traditionally regarded as the seat of King Mahabali. Temple records contain the earliest known reference to Onam celebrations, dated 861 CE. The temple's Onam festival runs for ten days in the Malayalam month of Chingam. It begins on Atham day with the hoisting of the festival flag and includes daily Kathakali, Thiruvathira and percussion performances, the Pakalpooram elephant procession on the ninth day and a symbolic welcome of Mahabali on Thiruvonam. Onasadya feasts served on the last two days are reported to draw more than 20,000 people. Thiruvonam next falls on Sunday 12 September 2027.
