12. Vyttila to Kakkanad by boat. The Water Metro’s second route crosses the backwaters from the Vyttila hub to Kakkanad, a pleasant ride even if you have no business at Infopark. Vyttila; metro to Vyttila.

16. A free evening at Changampuzha Park. The open-air stage in Edappally hosts classical concerts, Kathakali and poetry gatherings, and the metro station is at the gate. Edappally; Changampuzha Park metro.

17. Durbar Hall Art Centre. The Kerala Lalithakala Akademi’s gallery in the old durbar hall changes its exhibitions every few weeks. Ernakulam; Maharaja’s College metro.

Weekend tips

  • Saturday for Fort Kochi, Sunday for Mattancherry. The synagogue is closed on Saturdays, and the Dutch Palace on Fridays.
  • Mondays catch out long weekends. Hill Palace and the Kerala Museum are both closed.
  • Use the boats. The Water Metro to Fort Kochi is usually quicker than the road, and far more pleasant.
  • Metro hours. Trains start at 6 am, 8 am on Sundays, and the last services leave between 10 pm and 11 pm. Check KMRL on match nights and holidays.
  • Watch the sky. October and November bring evening thunderstorms. Keep an indoor fallback from our indoor guide.
