Weekend Activities for Kids in Kochi: A Parent's Guide

Updated 2026-10-12 · 7 min read · by the kochi2go team

Kochi is a good city for children once you plan around two things: the heat and humidity in the middle of the day, and the rain from June to November. The reliable weekend choices are an amusement park, a very large mall with a skating rink, three child-friendly museums, a handful of parks and, best of all, boats. This guide sorts them by type, with ages, closed days and transport. For dated events such as workshops, shows, carnivals and holiday camps, see our live kids and family events page.

Big days out

Wonderla

Wonderla Kochi sits on a hill at Pallikkara, about 12 km from the city centre beyond Kakkanad. It opened in 2000 as Veegaland, became Wonderla in 2011, and has more than 60 rides on a 30-acre site. The rides divide into dry rides, from carousels and children’s rides to high-thrill coasters, and water rides with wave pools and slides. Ticket prices change by day and season and are cheaper online in advance, so check the park’s website for current rates and child tickets, which are based on height. Go on a Saturday at opening time, do the dry rides first and keep the water park for the hot part of the afternoon. Synthetic swimwear is required for the water rides. There is no metro nearby; share a cab.

LuLu Mall

LuLu Mall at Edappally is the easiest full afternoon in the city, because everything is under one roof and the metro station is joined to the mall by a skywalk. The Funtura leisure zone has rides, an arcade, a 5D cinema, a climbing wall and a 12-lane bowling alley, and there is an ice-skating rink of 5,000 square feet. The nine-screen multiplex includes a 4DX hall. Each attraction charges separately at its counter. Weekends and school holidays are crowded, so arrive before lunch.

Museums that hold a child’s attention

The Kerala Museum

The Kerala Museum at Pathadipalam, run by the Madhavan Nayar Foundation, has three things children like. The Museum of Kerala History tells the region’s story through sculpted figures in a light and sound show. The Dolls Museum is a gallery of its own. And the museum’s Centre for Creativity runs art and craft workshops for children, usually with materials included in the fee. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm, with last entry listed at 4:20 pm, and is closed on Mondays. Pathadipalam metro station is a short walk away.

Hill Palace

Hill Palace in Tripunithura, built in 1865 for the Maharaja of Cochin, is a complex of 49 buildings on 54 acres of terraced gardens. Children tend to remember the royal crown and ornaments, the old weapons, and the deer park in the grounds. There are steps and slopes, so it is tiring with a pushchair. It is closed on Mondays. Take the metro to Thrippunithura Terminal or SN Junction and an auto from there, and go in the morning.

Kerala Folklore Museum

For older children, the Kerala Folklore Museum at Thevara is a three-storey building full of masks, puppets, Theyyam and Kathakali costumes and instruments, more than 6,000 pieces by the museum’s count. Check hours and tickets with the museum before you go, as they are not published on its website.

Boats, nets and the waterfront

The cheapest thrill in Kochi is a boat. The Water Metro’s electric boats leave the High Court terminal for Fort Kochi, Vypin and Mattancherry, and tickets cost ₹20 to ₹40. The boats are air-conditioned and enclosed, which makes them suitable for small children.

At Fort Kochi, walk from the jetty to Vasco da Gama Square to watch the Chinese fishing nets being lowered and raised by teams of fishermen. The beach walkway beyond is good for a run-around, though the beach itself is not for swimming. Parade Ground, a few minutes inland, is a big open maidan where local children play football.

Back in Ernakulam, the Marine Drive walkway is traffic-free for its whole 1.75 km and has a children’s park along the way. Go just before sunset.

Parks

  • Subhash Bose Park. An 11.5-acre park on the water beside the boat jetty, with a play area, lawns and walking tracks. It is close to Maharaja’s College metro station.
  • Changampuzha Park, Edappally. A small neighbourhood park with a play area, an aircraft on display and an open-air stage. The metro station is at the gate.
  • Mangalavanam. A patch of mangroves behind the High Court where patient children can spot herons and other waterbirds. Go early and keep it short.

Workshops and making things

Craft cafés have become the default weekend activity for school-age children. Loa Cafe on 1st Cross Road in Panampilly Nagar runs sessions back to back on weekend afternoons; one October 2026 weekend listed a Lego Art Lab, Daruma doll painting, coil pottery, yarn mandalas and a fish-bowl decoration session. Sessions are short, materials are provided, and each listing states the minimum age. The current list is on our workshops page.

Animation and art academies also hold open days. An Egllu Kids Creative Fest is listed for Sunday 25 October 2026, from 11 am to 4 pm, at the Egllu Animation and VFX Academy in Ernakulam.

Shows and performances

The evening Kathakali programme at the Kerala Kathakali Centre in Fort Kochi works better for children than most parents expect, because it begins with the make-up session: they watch the faces being painted green and red before the drumming starts. Aim for the session that starts at about 5 pm, and confirm the day’s timings with the centre.

Changampuzha Park’s open-air evenings are free and informal, so nobody minds if a child gets restless. And on match days, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor is an experience in itself. Kerala Blasters’ listed home fixtures run from 25 October 2026 to 16 January 2027. Evening kick-offs at 7:30 pm make for a late night, and the stands are loud, so carry ear protection for small children. Dates are on our Blasters page.

Dated events this season

  • 17 October 2026: HYBE India Pop-up Park for K-pop fans at the CIAL Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre, Nedumbassery, with free entry from 2 pm.
  • 21 November 2026: Moto Summit Kochi at The Grounds @ Chakola Mill, Kalamassery, with stunt shows and a parade of riding clubs, for ages five and above. It is loud.
  • Late December 2026: The Cochin Carnival in Fort Kochi. The rally on the afternoon of 1 January 2027 is the part to take children to; the midnight crowd on New Year’s Eve is not. See our carnival guide.
  • December holidays: Christmas stars, carols and mall decorations, plus holiday camps, which are announced a few weeks ahead on our Christmas page.

Half-day trips

  • Cherai Beach. About 25 km away on Vypin island, with shallow water close to shore and the backwaters behind. Lifeguard cover varies, so keep children within reach, and avoid the monsoon months when the sea is rough.
  • Kumbalangi. An island village about 12 km from the city, known for its fishing nets and canoe rides through the backwaters.

Practical tips for parents

  • Plan around the midday heat. Do outdoor things before 10:30 am or after 4 pm, and keep the middle of the day for malls and museums.
  • Carry rain cover from June to November. Showers are sudden, and October and November bring evening thunderstorms.
  • Use the metro. Fares are ₹10 to ₹60, stations have lifts, and trains start at 6 am, 8 am on Sundays.
  • Remember Mondays. The Kerala Museum and Hill Palace are both closed.
  • Check heights and ages. Wonderla’s rides, the skating rink and most workshops have limits.
  • Carry water and a change of clothes for boat, beach and water-park days.

If the weather turns, our indoor guide has more ideas, and the free things to do in Kochi list is useful when the month has been expensive. Everything on this weekend is on this weekend in Kochi.
