Aluva, on the Periyar river, is the northern terminus of the Kochi Metro and the main gateway between the city and the airport. Its biggest event is Sivarathri: the Aluva Mahadeva Temple's Shiva linga stands on the Manappuram sandbank in the river, and on Maha Shivaratri night, which falls on Saturday 6 March 2027, pilgrims keep vigil there and offer rites for ancestors at dawn, with a trade fair on the banks afterwards. Through the rest of the year Aluva's colleges, riverside halls and hotels host weddings, seminars and local festivals. KMRL feeder buses connect Aluva station with Cochin International Airport.
