Vypin is the 27 km long barrier island north of the harbour mouth, linked to Ernakulam by the Goshree bridges and to Fort Kochi by ferry. The Water Metro's first route, opened in April 2023, runs from the High Court terminal to Vypin. Puthuvype has a beach and a lighthouse that is the tallest in Kerala, and the villages further north are lined with fish farms, toddy shops and seafood restaurants. Events on the island are mostly beach clean-ups, cycling and running routes, church feasts and resort parties, with the bigger crowds heading on to Cherai. Buses run the length of the island from High Court junction.
